Year 6 Curriculum June - July
English: The Hobbit or The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

A detailed study of this classic novel during which pupils should be able to:

  • Read fluently, accurately and confidently from the text
  • Use inference and deduction to identify underlying themes
  • Analyse how moods, feelings and atmosphere are conveyed
  • Understand and discuss how characters are developed
  • Demonstrate in their writing an understanding of narrative structure
  • Choose language and images to suggest character and atmosphere
  • Explore the characters and themes of the text through drama
  • Listen and respond to the views of others without teacher intervention
Maths: Primary Framework for Mathematics

The planning structure for each year is organised into five blocks. The structure is the same for each year group. Each block has incorporated into it objectives from the Using and applying mathematics strand and from two or three of the other core strands. The blocks are:

  • Block A: Counting, partitioning and calculating
  • Block B: Securing number facts, understanding shape
  • Block C: Handling data and measures
  • Block D: Calculating, measuring and understanding shape
  • Block E: Securing number facts, relationships and calculating

Each block is made up of three units. A unit represents 2 or 3 weeks of teaching. The units are designed to be used independently when planning a period of 2 or 3 weeks' work.

Science:

The Science Curriculum has now been fully covered. Children will receive a one-off introduction to the science facilities at Barking Abbey

Information and Communication Technology: Using the Internet (Internet)
  • use a search engine to locate, understand and interpret information
  • understand how to use a search engine by using “and” searches
  • recognise information must be read before it can be understood and interpreted for others
  • use a favourites list to find and bookmark information
  • enter a URL and use hyperlinks to find information on the Internet
  • copy and paste relevant text and graphics from the Internet into a word processing program

History: Britain Since 1945
  • Understand some of the key features of the post war period
  • Understand some of the key changes and developments that occurred post-war
  • Be able to interpret different forms of evidence
  • Be able to comment upon different social aspects of the period
Geography: Personal Projects
  • Use a variety of resources to find about a country
  • Be able to relate land use to industry and their economy
  • Be able to comment on how climate affects lifestyle
  • Understand the influence of the landscape upon the population
  • Develop mapping skills

Art: Modelling
  • Observe and accurately record from direct observation
  • Model from 2-D drawings
  • Construct fence or support for figures
  • Develop clay modelling skills
  • Work on forms using laminating skills
Design Technology: Food (continued)
  • Understand how to follow a recipe accurately
  • Be able to replace ingredients with a healthier alternative
  • Make a pizza with a variety of toppings
  • Assess the quality of the product
  • Be able to suggest ways of improving the product
