Manor Junior School Year 6 Curriculum September - October
English: Narrative Poetry

A large portion of this unit is spent studying ‘The Lady of Shallot’ by Alfred `Lord Tennyson. During the course of this unit children should:

  • Be able to read and ‘perform’ a poem
  • Consider some of the meanings of words and phrases in the poems
  • Read questions on the poem carefully and identify what is being asked
  • Use knowledge gained from previous work to help their understanding of techniques such as simile, metaphor, alliteration, rhyme and rhythm
  • Look for hidden meanings within the poems
  • Give their own opinions but always with a valid reason
  • Understand the author’s intentions behind writing a story as a poem

Most of the poems taught in this unit come from The Oxford Book of Story Poems (£5.99 Oxford University Press ISBN 0-19-276103-X) which is an excellent collection and good preparation for English in secondary school.

Maths: Primary Framework for Mathematics

The planning structure for each year is organised into five blocks. The structure is the same for each year group. Each block has incorporated into it objectives from the Using and applying mathematics strand and from two or three of the other core strands. The blocks are:

  • Block A: Counting, partitioning and calculating
  • Block B: Securing number facts, understanding shape
  • Block C: Handling data and measures
  • Block D: Calculating, measuring and understanding shape
  • Block E: Securing number facts, relationships and calculating

Each block is made up of three units. A unit represents 2 or 3 weeks of teaching. The units are designed to be used independently when planning a period of 2 or 3 weeks' work.

Science: Interdependence and Adaptation
  • Know that green plants need light to grow
  • Make careful observations of plant growth and explain these using simple scientific knowledge and understanding
  • Know that green plants make new plant material using air and water in the presence of light
  • Understand and use keys to identify animals and plants
  • Know that animals and plants in a local habitat are interdependent
  • Recognise how animals and plants are suited to their environment
  • Be aware that animals and plants are found in different habitats
  • Know that food chains normally begin with a green plant
  • Know that food chains can be used to show feeding relationships in a habitat
  • Know that different plants grow in different soil conditions
  • Know that roots anchor the plant and are responsible for the uptake of water and nutrients from the soil
  • Devise fair tests to investigate phenomena
Information and Communication Technology: Multimedia Presentation (Microsoft PowerPoint)
  • understand what is meant by multimedia
