Year 4 Block 6 - June to July
English: Short Story Writing

A unit that draws the following key skills from different short stories enabling children to:

  • Read fluently, accurately and confidently from the chosen texts
  • Use inference and deduction to deepen their understanding of character
  • Identify underlying themes
  • Plan and write well structured stories with effective openings & resolutions
  • Use adventurous vocabulary to develop their own characters
  • Use descriptive vocabulary drawn from the stories they have read
  • Use a range of conjunctions including: if, so, while, though, since, when
  • Write in paragraphs and sentences with capital letters and full stops
  • Understand the need for verb/subject agreement in written English
  • Develop understanding of the laying out and punctuating of direct speech

Maths: Primary Framework for Mathematics

The planning structure for each year is organised into five blocks. The structure is the same for each year group. Each block has incorporated into it objectives from the Using and applying mathematics strand and from two or three of the other core strands. The blocks are:

  • Block A: Counting, partitioning and calculating
  • Block B: Securing number facts, understanding shape
  • Block C: Handling data and measures
  • Block D: Calculating, measuring and understanding shape
  • Block E: Securing number facts, relationships and calculating

Each block is made up of three units. A unit represents 2 or 3 weeks of teaching. The units are designed to be used independently when planning a period of 2 or 3 weeks' work.

Science: Habitats
  • Know how to identify different habitats
  • Know that different organisms are found in different habitats
  • Observe and record conditions in a habitat
  • Use a key to identify organisms
  • Identify food sources for different organisms
  • Describe a food chain
  • Identify ways organisms are suited to their habitat
  • That animals and the environment needs to be treated with respect
Information Communication Technology: Cross Curricular
This block allows children to use their knowledge of ICT to support their work in other curriculum areas.
Religious Education: Local Religions
History: The Tudors - Political History
  • Distinguish between wealth and poverty in Tudor Times
  • Locate the Tudors within the history of Britain
  • Gather information about Henry VIII from different sources
  • Understand the problems behind and the reasons for Henry's first divorce
  • Know the reasons and results of Henry VIII's subsequent marriages
  • Understand the importance of building alliances through marriage
 Art: Construction and 3D Modelling
  • Learn how paper works as a modelling material
  • Understand how to laminate things
  • Be able to laminate with torn tissue paper
  • Be able to construct a model using these skills
  • Be able to combine techniques within model making
  • Be able to paint and decorate their completed models

  • Dance and Games
