Year 4 Block 1 - September to October
English: Poetry: Shape and Form

A unit that draws from a selection of Poems the following key learning points enabling the children to:

  • Understand rhyme and identify rhyming patters
  • Know that even when poems do not rhyme, writers pay careful attention to the ‘shape’ of a poem
  • Use varying line lengths & repetition in composing their own poems
  • Learn 2 poems by heart and recite them comfortably to an audience
  • Read aloud confidently and accurately from a range of poems
  • Write poems in a range of forms
  • Understand and use the term ‘adjectives’
  • Understand the functions of a thesaurus

You may find it useful to read and discuss some different Poems with your child during the course of this unit.

Maths: Primary Framework for Mathematics

The planning structure for each year is organised into five blocks. The structure is the same for each year group. Each block has incorporated into it objectives from the Using and applying mathematics strand and from two or three of the other core strands. The blocks are:

  • Block A: Counting, partitioning and calculating
  • Block B: Securing number facts, understanding shape
  • Block C: Handling data and measures
  • Block D: Calculating, measuring and understanding shape
  • Block E: Securing number facts, relationships and calculating

Each block is made up of three units. A unit represents 2 or 3 weeks of teaching. The units are designed to be used independently when planning a period of 2 or 3 weeks' work.

Science: Moving and Growing
  • Know that humans and some other animals have skeletons
  • Know that human skeletons are inside the body and grow as humans grow
  • Know that the skeleton supports and protects the body and helps us to move
  • Know that muscles are attached to bones
  • Know a muscle contracts to make a bone move
  • Know that when someone is exercising or moving fast, the muscles work hard
  • Know that muscles require a higher flow of blood when working hard
  • Know that muscle work in pairs
Information and Communication Technology: Writing for different audiences (Microsoft Word)
  • Use a variety of fonts to emphasise text
  • Cut and paste to reorganise text
  • Amend text to improve clarity and change mood
  • Correct mistakes with a spellchecker
  • Use “Find and Replace” to amend longer texts
  • Edit texts for a specific audience and present their work
Religious Education: The Church
  • Understand the term 'Church' as a building and a community
  • Understand the symbolism of various features of a church interior
  • Understand different ways in which people think about God
  • Understand the story of 'The Sacrifice of Ishmael'
  • Be able to transfer understanding into a drama activity
  • Know and understand the Muslim belief in the 'Night Journey'

The children will visit a local church as part of their studies in this unit

Geography: UK and world Geography
  • Use an atlas to locate cities, rivers, mountain ranges in the world and the UK
  • Learn how the world 'fits' together
  • Use a map to give directions from one city to another in the UK
  • Know how movement in the earth's crust causes volcanoes, earthquakes etc
 Design Technology: Mechanisms
  • Be able to describe the function and features of a gear wheel
  • Be able to describe the function and features of a pulley
  • Use skills and knowledge learned to inform a design
  • Use design proposals to aid the making of a model
  • Apply materials and colour to models in order to enhance their appearances
  • Evaluate models and suggest ways of making improvements

  • Gymnastics
  • Football, Hockey and Swimming
Music: Ostinato

NB: History and Art are not taught during this Study Block
