Year 3 Curriculum: Block 4 - March to April
English:
  • Reading and Writing Short Stories- "At the Zoo"
  • Newspaper Reports
  • Author Focus- "The Worst Witch" by Jill Murphy

You may find it useful to read and discuss some books by Jill Murphy during the course of this unit.

Maths: Primary Framework for Mathematics

The planning structure for each year is organised into five blocks. The structure is the same for each year group. Each block has incorporated into it objectives from the Using and applying mathematics strand and from two or three of the other core strands. The blocks are:

  • Block A: Counting, partitioning and calculating
  • Block B: Securing number facts, understanding shape
  • Block C: Handling data and measures
  • Block D: Calculating, measuring and understanding shape
  • Block E: Securing number facts, relationships and calculating

Each block is made up of three units. A unit represents 2 or 3 weeks of teaching. The units are designed to be used independently when planning a period of 2 or 3 weeks' work.

Information & Communication Technology: Exploring Simulations (Simulation Explorer)
  • use a computer simulation program
  • understand that computer simulations can represent real or imaginary situations
  • understand computer simulations allow users to try things which would be difficult or impossible to do in practice
  • use a computer simulation to make and explore predictions
  • understand how computer simulations can help them learn
  • evaluate a range of computer simulations as part of work in another curriculum area
Religious Education: God's World
 
Geography: Weather
  • Know that the weather is made from the action of the sun, rain and wind
  • Understand the names and functions of a thermometer, wind tester & rain gauge
  • Know how weather is different in different parts of the school
  • Know that weather conditions contrast in different regions of the world
  • Know that local peoples lives are affected by the weather
Design Technology: Textiles
  • Understand what seams are and why they are important
  • Be able to perform a backstitch
  • Be able to use their own ideas to produce a transfer
  • Use backstitch to join two pieces of material together
  • Use different methods to attach add-ons to a bag
  • Understand that evaluation is an essential part of the design process
Physical Education:
  • Gymnastics - travelling
  • Games - Outdoor Education (Orienteering) and Swimming
SEAL - Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning
